Overhauled Cranes Delivered to Network Rail

Cowans Sheldon have just completed a handover of the remaining three long welded rail trains (LWRT) overhauled and upgraded for Network Rail. The machines, manufactured built by Cowans Sheldon in 1984 – 85 have been given a new lease of life by extending their working life by 15 years.

The machines are designed to deliver and recover long lengths of welded rail of up to 266 meters long to and from trackside so that the worn existing track can be changed over.

The enhancement included new technological advances in electrical and hydraulic systems, new engines to the latest environmental requirements and design changes to cater for a greater range of rails and improved maintainability. The contract was circa. £5.8m over a three year period.
